Something I admire about Troye Sivan is how his music has grown with him. As someone who has been a fan of Troye since his days on YouTube and his first ever EP Trxye, you can tell not only how his music has evolved as he grows older, but also how more confident he has become through his years as a musician. Each album he makes has a different sound, with his debut album Blue Neighbourhood being very pop focused – a little sad with synth-pop elements. His sophomore album Bloom starts to move into the dance-pop sound that became front and centre of his third album Something To Give Each Other. 

She’s the Best, the debut single and title track of his new album, brings a different sound yet again, with primarily spoken word vocals. I believe this was a choice to really drive the lyrics of this song and highlight . The song centres on women, and the adoration Troye has for the women in his life specifically. Speaking about this song, Sivan said it was the first time he hasn’t written about men or tried to overly psychoanalyse himself in his music, and I admire that he’s choosing to focus on something different.

You can tell this song is special to Troye, and that he cares a lot about this new era of music he’s making. The video for She’s the Best starring Nicole Kidman captures the essence of the song, celebrating and uplifting all types of women and drag artists. The video itself was excellent, though that’s unsurprising given his history of incredible music videos (I wrote essays about the Blue Neighbourhood Trilogy of videos in High School).

Though different from the kind of music I would typically listen to, I like the meaning behind this song, and I look forward to seeing if his new approach to songwriting continues when the album is released on October 9th
